LETTER: Tea Party protestors not racist

The Lufkin Daily News / Chris Navarro (2009-09-20)

There are those among us that try to paint the participants of Tea Party protests, town hall meetings or the march in Washington as racist. You are either ignorant or unwilling to face the facts. You suffer from the same blindness afflicting the majority of our leaders in D.C.

These protesting citizens are not stooges of the GOP. They are not whites angry that a black man was elected president. They are not haters of the Democrats. If you would actually go among them and speak with them, you would find people of both parties and independent voters. You would find people of all races, of all religions, of both genders and of all ages. The common thread they share is a love of country, the Constitution and of family. They also share a great concern for the future of our country and an immense and growing anger toward politicians that are seen as ignoring the will of the people, politicians that are leading our country to financial and social ruin.

This concern did not start with Obama being elected. Many of these protestors were just as angry, if not more so, with President Bush. Why do you think the GOP has steadily lost ground over the last many years? Bush and the GOP lost sight of why they were elected and wandered away from the message the voters sent them. That message being a desire for smaller government, more fiscal responsibility and ethical, honest representation in D.C. Obama was elected due to the desire for change in politics, a change of the status quo in D.C. Unfortunately he, and the Democrats in charge, missed the point and thought change meant our system of government and MORE government control. This is the reason for the seemingly sudden protests and outrage, not because a black man was elected.
