A detainee, who professed to be the mastermind behind the attacks of September 11, has stated that he lied under harsh interrogations by the CIA. As reported by AFP, recently released government transcripts show that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed told a military tribunal that he made false confessions after being tortured by interrogators.

Wired PR News – A detainee, who professed to be the mastermind behind the attacks of September 11, has stated that he lied under harsh interrogations by the CIA. As reported by AFP, recently released government transcripts show that Khalid Sheikh Mohammed told a military tribunal that he made false confessions after being tortured by interrogators.

Mohammed is quoted as stating in 2007, “I just make up stories…Where is he? I don’t know. Then he torture me…Then I said: ‘Yes, he is in this area or this is Al-Qaeda…’ I said no, they torture me.” Another known detainee, Abu Zubaydah, is said to have reported he was tortured to the point that he nearly died after sustaining injuries.

George Little, a spokesman for the CIA, is quoted by AFP as stating, “The CIA plainly has a very different take on its past interrogation practices, what they were and what they weren’t, and on the need to protect properly classified national security information.”

Ben Wizer, a staff attorney with the American Civil Liberties union (ACLU), is further quoted in the report as stating, “The documents released today provide further evidence of brutal torture and abuse in the CIA’s interrogation program and demonstrate beyond doubt that this information has been suppressed solely to avoid embarrassment and growing demands for accountability.”
